Olivia Shapes Up

I spend a lot of time making fun of my youngest daughter’s lack of interest in the bathroom, so today I’d like to share a quick story that will show off how intelligent she truly is for her age. Remember, she’s only 2.5!

Last Wednesday Jacqui was over. She is trying out for a leader position in her marching band. She REALLY wants to be a Drill Leader and I think she’d be great at it! So she asked us if she could practice her speech on us and, of course, we agreed. We all gathered around in the living room and Jacqui began her speech. Those of you who know Jacqui know she is very animated, but still, her topic was not one a two year-old is much interested in. About five minutes into her speech Jacqui begins discussing the topic of marching formations and how the freshman always struggle when they first learn the formations. Mind you Olivia has been sitting there quietly (none of us even dreaming that she’s listening) for about 5 minutes. So the speech from there went something like this:

I promise to spend extra time assisting the freshman during formation practice. I will be available before and after school to help anyone who would like some extra practice. I know the formations can be difficult so I will be very specific when I am helping them. If we are working on circles, I will say, “Susie. Today it is a C I R C L E. We will be going AROUND.” Or, “Jimmy, this will be a S Q U A R E…”

At which point Olivia finally pipes up and says, “Hey Jacqui! Jacqui!” Jacqui, kindly acknowledging her rude interruption says, “Yes, Boo?” Half forgetting she was even there and half thinking she was going to ask Jacqui to move so she could see the TV that had been muted behind her, instead we are caught completely off guard when she offers her suggestion, “How about triangles?” I don’t know if it was the serious expression on her face or the inquisitive tone in her voice that made the moment what it was. There was a brief few seconds of silence and then the entire room busted into laughter. Now, I suppose this may be one of those, “You had to be there…” moments. But she had been sitting there for over 5 minutes (a lifetime for a toddler) actually listening! Not only that, she felt so strongly about the topic of shapes that she offered a suggestion! And a very pertinent one, I might add.

How incredibly brilliant is that? You mark my word, one day she’ll be graduating from Harvard…even if she IS still wearing diapers. :P

Sounds like a reasonable question to me. I was wondering the same thing. Way to go Boo.
