Tales From The Toybox

There’s Progress In Peeville

Believe it or not, we have actually made quite a lot of progress on the potty! I had decided to give up until I am off work this summer and pick up the stressful potty training process again at that time, but Olivia has really started to show an interest. On one of our weekly trips to the bookstore I picked up a copy of “Potty Training for Dummies”. The book suggested not using the smaller potty seats that snap on to the larger potty…like we were doing. Instead, the book says you should purchase your child his/her own little potty chair that sits on the floor next to the big one. Apparently some kids are afraid of the big potty. Maybe that explains why my older kids manage to pee on the walls and all over the seat. Anyway…

Free, Reduced or Paid?

I don’t often complain about my job, but every now and then it really gets to me and I just have to vent a little. Overall I love my job. I love the work itself, I LOVE the hours, I enjoy my co-workers (some of which I’ve worked with for 6 years now)…I really don’t have a lot of reason to complain. It’s the perfect job for a mom! I work 4 hours a day during the afternoon and half of the time that I’m gone my kids are home with their daddy napping and not stuck in some daycare. I get all the school holidays off and a good part of the summer off. It’s perfect…except for every now and then.

An Email I Received From A Friend

There was a blind girl who hated herself because she was blind. She hated everyone, except her loving boyfriend. He was always there for her. She told her boyfriend, ‘If I could only see the world, I will marry you.’

One day, someone donated a pair of eyes to her. When the bandages came off, she was able to see everything, including her boyfriend.

He asked her,’Now that you can see the world, will you marry me?’ The girl looked at her boyfriend and saw that he was blind. The sight of his closed eyelids shocked her. She hadn’t expected that. The thought of looking at them the rest of her life led her to refuse to marry him.

Her boyfriend left in tears and days later wrote a note to her saying: ‘Take good care of your eyes, my dear, for before they were yours, they were mine.’

This is how the human brain often works when our status changes. Only a very few remember what life was like before, and who was always by their side in the most painful situations.

We visited Sea World again this past weekend. We have season passes and want to make the most of it! Olivia LOVES the dolphins and begs us to take her there almost daily. The next trip we plan on spending the entire day at the water park. The $106 we spent will be well worth the money!

Here’s Olivia right outside Dolphin Cove.

Olivia Shapes Up

I spend a lot of time making fun of my youngest daughter’s lack of interest in the bathroom, so today I’d like to share a quick story that will show off how intelligent she truly is for her age. Remember, she’s only 2.5!

Last Wednesday Jacqui was over. She is trying out for a leader position in her marching band. She REALLY wants to be a Drill Leader and I think she’d be great at it! So she asked us if she could practice her speech on us and, of course, we agreed. We all gathered around in the living room and Jacqui began her speech. Those of you who know Jacqui know she is very animated, but still, her topic was not one a two year-old is much interested in. About five minutes into her speech Jacqui begins discussing the topic of marching formations and how the freshman always struggle when they first learn the formations. Mind you Olivia has been sitting there quietly (none of us even dreaming that she’s listening) for about 5 minutes. So the speech from there went something like this:

I promise to spend extra time assisting the freshman during formation practice. I will be available before and after school to help anyone who would like some extra practice. I know the formations can be difficult so I will be very specific when I am helping them. If we are working on circles, I will say, “Susie. Today it is a C I R C L E. We will be going AROUND.” Or, “Jimmy, this will be a S Q U A R E…”

A Proud Moment

I tell you, Olivia will make a wonderful mother some day! She already has some of the skills that it takes to raise a child and she’s only two and a half! I am so proud of her. Today she changed a diaper all by herself! Not just any diaper either…no, she changed her OWN diaper. She spent 30 minutes prior to that begging me for a fresh diaper and I told her, “No. I will take you to the potty but I will not change your diaper. If you want a fresh diaper, change it yourself.” And she did! So all you parents out there who are sooooo proud of your little ones who tee tee on the potty…pshtttt! That’s nothing! My kid can change her own diaper, top that!

Now, if she’d just get her own job so she can pay for them!!

The kids had fun this morning playing in our backyard like they do most days that the weather is nice. Carson has decided that the grass is not so bad and it’s easier on his knees than crawling on our rough patio. He really likes to climb up and down the car ramp!

Olivia just loves to dance. I found this little ballerina outfit at a garage sale and had to get it for her. She has a natural talent for dancing…obviously inherited from me ;) This summer she will be taking a tap, ballet, and jazz class. I can’t wait to watch her in class! With her sassy little attitude she should be very entertaining!

Blowing kisses…
